Sonlight Science
Well, I’m not pleased with Sonlight’s science at the moment. They start you off with plants and then quickly go to reading about animals, however in week 7 you start doing science experiments with seeds. *go figure* Then somewhere in the weeks 15 or so you go back to growing different kinds of seeds for the experiments. You spend weeks doing seed experiments but only reading briefly, while reading tons of animal stuff and not even a poster of the different animals. So I’ve decided to buy Apologia’s Botany and we will use it from Aug. to Dec then pick up with animals in Jan through May. It kind of frustrates me since I really like the books that SL is using for science this year but to not correlate the reading with the experiments just drives me crazy. I do however really like the dvd of the experiments as well as using the TOPS books. I would like to add in a few more TOPS books later. So today we will start with the first TOPS experiment for Radishes.

Why on earth would SL arrange the book like that? It makes no logical sense to me to do plants then animals, plants and back to animals.
Perhaps you could write/call/email them to find out their reasoning and explain your frustrations. They may not realized how difficult they have made things by doing it this way.
This is an ongoing thing with Sonlight, I don’t think that in any year does the reading correlate to the experiments very well. I should email them but I know it won’t change for this year. But maybe in the future.
I used their 3rd grade and 6th grade years ago when my two were in those grades and I found their scheduling illogical. Since you have been a loyal customer, they might listen to you if you write them.
Ok, I sent them a brief email telling them how I loved the books for this year but that I was unhappy with how the experiments and the reading correlated and also suggested using apologia’s elementary science at least in grades 4-6. I’ll let you know what the reply is.
What an odd schedule! I hope they take your complaint seriously. My DS10 will be using Apologia’s Exploring Creation with Astronomy this year. I’m really looking forward to it. I hope you enjoy the Botany book.
I didn’t realize that your son was 10 !!?? Noah will turn 10 on Oct.12, I wish I had the time and money for a visit.
I hear ya. We cancelled our weeklong vacation this year because of home improvements.
I may have to work on DH for even a long weekend away with the kids. Maybe a little NW of our current location.
Come to see the rock and roll hall of fame……….then you can see me. After all I’m NW of you.
This is the reply that I received from Sonlight on monday the 9th.
